Re: Looking for my great grandfather's birth record and possibly his foster/adoption info

Messaggio da onesister »

I wish that my family story does not remain unknown forever, but there are so many unanswered questions that I am losing some hope...

I find it odd that Ugo/James is not listed on the 1900 or 1910 US census with the Salvatos (only Vincenzo/James), which means that if they are not one and the same (though the same age), Ugo was either living in Italy away from his foster parents when younger or they adopted him at an older age, around 1912. The fact that he came from Scafati to Boston is also confusing. How did he get there (from Naples?) I wonder?

I just ran the "clusters" report on MyHeritage.com,where my 23andme relative is also listed, and he was not included. We share 3.1%/219cM. He is in a list with other matches that says, "The following matches met the inclusion criteria but ended up in singleton clusters without other members and are therefore excluded from the analysis as well." I take this to mean that he and I do not share a common ancestor with any of the other matches on that website.

I am waiting for my Ancestry dna results (I had never tried that one) although I don't know if any of the matches there will provide any clues to the Salvato/Ratti mystery. We shall see!

I will continue to investigate. Again, thank you to all of you for your gracious assistance in trying to unravel this mystery. I will let you know if I find anything worth pursuing further!

Very interesting, Lorena. I wonder why he sailed to Boston (maybe that was common?). I also don't know if he ever lived in Boston after being married there, or if he had any children with Luvisina Riccio. I believe they were on the same arrival ship into Boston from Italy.

Where did you find the death certificate that calls him J.M. Rats? I have not yet seen the death certificate my dna relative has in his possession (he needed to find it with his other ancestry paperwork). I didn't know that death certificates could be requested from hospitals. I can give a call and find out.

The World War II draft card from 1942 calls him James Ugo M. Ratti, born September 9, 1889, in Italy.

The Connecticut Death Index lists him as James Ratti, with a birthdate of abt 1889.

The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index lists him as James Ratti with a birthdate of September 9, 1890. He claimed Social Security benefits on September 21, 1955.

His gravestone on the US Find A Grave index says James M. Ratti, Father, 1889-1960. It says his birthdate is September 9, 1889.

Very confusing!

Thank goodness for the homonym! I don't think my brain has room for any additional names!

I am anxiously awaiting my Ancestry results, hoping for a magical, insightful match to help solve this mystery (doubtful, I know). They should arrive by Monday.

I tried to see about obtaining a death certificate from the hospital but I believe we can only get them from the vital records office in the town where a person resided or died.

I was thinking to try to locate James Salvato in 1912 (as he was called on the divorce document and how he signed it) in Scafati, as I know he was there, to see if there is any indication that he stayed there and never returned to the US and/or changed his name - and/or was also living with the older Vincenzo Salvato.

Erica, thank you very much for this information! I was out of town this weekend so I apologize for the delayed response. I will see what I can find out re: the names listed here and any possible connection to Ugo/James Ratti!

The only Ancestry matches I have with a surname Ratti are descended from Ugo/James. Not one surname Salvato. Very strange. I was hoping for some sort of "hint" but no such luck. I will take a deeper dive and see if anyone other than those closer relatives has his name (or Vincenzo/James Salvato) in their trees.
