Looking for my great grandfather's birth record and possibly his foster/adoption info

Messaggio da onesister »

Hello. I am trying to find information about my great grandfather and am looking for any insight people may have. It's seeming like he was called Vincenzo/James Salvato in the US (born in Italy to I'm not sure whom) and later called James Ratti.

I have seen his date of birth in Italy listed as September 9, 1889 and also September 9, 1890. Later generations here in Connecticut USA were told that he was born in Naples but he also listed his birthplace as Scafati on one passenger list. He lived with foster parents as described below.

My great grandfather is listed as Vincenzo Salvato on the marriage certificate to my great grandmother, Rachela Pellegrino, in New Haven, CT, on July 17, 1909; however, he signed it James Salvato (I've come to learn the Vincenzo-James name relation with Italian Americans). His parents are listed as Raffaele Salvato and Rosa Arcella. He is shown on a 1910 US census as their son, but listed as single. My grandmother, Annina Salvato, was born in Atrani, Italy, on June 29, 1910. Her father is listed on the birth record as Vincenzo Salvato. Connecticut US divorce records from New Haven on June 14, 1912 (I have the certificate), list Rachela's husband as James Salvato, in parts unknown.

Later records show that on December 10, 1912, Raffeale Salvato was with his (adopted) son Ugo Ratti, who'd returned from Italy to Boston (on a marriage record there) and later moved to New Haven (and ultimately East Hartford CT). Mr. Ratti is later listed in many places as James Madeio Ratti and his family is very traceable forward. It is well-documented that he was the foster/adopted son of the Salvatos, even in Rosa's obituary.

I am related on 23andme to a man whose great grandfather was James Ratti. We share the amount of DNA that two people who share a great grandparent would share. I understand that we may have another relation, but the information we have is intriguing.

I have no information for "James Salvato" past the 1910 US census. I believe his name was changed after that time. James Ratti is seemingly the same age as Vincenzo/James Salvato, and I think the two men are one and the same person but don't know how to prove it. Does anyone have any suggestions or other thoughts if they aren't one and the same?

The Salvatos originally came from Scafati. Raffaele was born there, I believe on October 28, 1854. He and Rosa were married there December 16, 1878.

I cannot locate US arrival records for either Vincenzo Salvato or James Ratti, but if I can find his birth records it may become easier. He lists his parents as Raffaele and Rosa on all US documentation that I have seen.

I am unable to find a birth record for Vincenzo Salvato OR James Ratti. I do not know when or why he came to live with the Salvatos. Any insight or assistance locating information for him would be appreciated. Thank you.

Salvato Annina's birth record.
She was the daughter of Vincenzo and Pellegrino Rachele:

Could Vincenzo Salvato (father of Annina) be Raffaele's brother?

This is interesting, Erica. Thank you!The birth and marriage dates for Raffaele match what I have. I did not know that Raffaele had a brother, Vincenzo.

I don't think Raffaele's brother is my great grandfather (Annina's father) but I should try to see if I can find out if he had any children. The marriage certificate from Connecticut for Vincenzo Salvato (he signed it James Salvato) and Rachela Pellegrino that I obtained several years ago lists his age in 1909 as 21, and his parents as Raffaele Salvato and Rosa Arcella. Vincenzo is also listed on a Philadelphia US census as the son of the Salvatos in 1900 as age 10, birth year 1890. He was called James on the census document. He is later listed on the Connecticut US census in 1910 as the son of the Salvatos, age 19, born in 1899. I'm not sure if he was the biological son of the Salvatos as the later coincidences with the name James Ratti in relation to the Salvatos are confusing.

The Salvatos, to my knowledge, had a biological daughter named Francesca, born aprox 1877. She is listed on the Philadelphia 1900 census next door to the Salvatos with her husband, James Silvestro, and some children.

I also did not know that the Salvatos had a son, Francesco, whose name is so close to Francesca (above). I wonder what became of him.

I find my dna relationship to a man whose great grandfather was James Ratti, adopted/foster son of the people listed earlier on as my great grandfather's parents. Such a mystery!

Hi Erica,

You are so helpful and I am thankful for the time you've spent looking into this!

I've seen the marriage record from Boston on US sites but I can't tell when/where he was adopted and why in later times he was listed as James Ratti rather than Ugo Ratti. Neither James nor Ugo Ratti is listed on the 1900 or 1910 census with the Salvatos which seems odd if the Salvatos had adopted him at a young age. I don't know if this was a different person than Vincenzo/James Salvato or just coincidentally a person close in age to him (although I am a close dna relative of James Ratti's great grandson and Vincenzo/James Salvato is the name I have for my great grandfather - very odd - same "parents" for both men). My newfound cousin knew that James Ratti was adopted. If he and James Salvato are one and the same, this would make sense but I would still love to know the biological parents of my great grandfather.

I cannot find a birth record for Vincenzo Salvato and/or James Ratti, (1899/1890) so I can't figure out the whole story. I understand that people were born out of wedlock, etc. (I have a great grandmother on another side and the grandmother of Annina also, for whom I have birth records), but it's finding the records that is the most difficult in this case.

My newfound cousin from 23andme reached out to me recently as he's also hit a brick wall trying to find information for Vincenzo/James in terms of arrival records or even better - a birth record - but no such luck.

Is there a way in Italy where the "foster son/adopted son" of Raffaele and Rosa would have been recorded?
