Help finding Italian Ancestor (Volpin from Veneto)
Buongiorno / Good Day
The reason for writing is that I am looking for historical birth, marriage, and death records of my Italian born family.
My great-grandfather emigrated to Brazil and settled in Pedreira, a small town close to Campinas in the state of São Paulo .
His death certificate states his name to be João Volpin, from Rovigo, Italy and his parents were Paulo (=Paolo) Volpin and Theresa (=Teresa) Capato.
He died in Pedreira in the state of São Paulo in Brazil on 16 Jan 1932 at 77 years of age which logically means he was born in 1854 or 1855.
Rovigo is both a city and province but I have not more detail.
João is not an Italian name so I presume his Italian/original name is likely to have been Giovanni or Giacomo. Could it be anything else?
His parents must have been Paolo and Teresa in Italian.
I unfortunately do not know in what year he left Italy and arrived in Brazil, from where he left in Italy (as Veneto is in the north perhaps Venice or Genova), and where in Brazil he arrived (large ports are Santos and Rio de Janeiro).
I am wondering whether people have looked in the same area (Rovigo province or Veneto region), and if yes, where you were successful (local administration, church, cultural group, etc.)
In case anybody has experience with the search for documentation regarding people emigrating from Northern Italy (ship registries/documents etc.), that would be helpful as well.
The region of Veneto became part of Italy either in 1861 (unification) or 1866 (third) Italian war of independence, meanig Rovigo was not Italy when my GGF was born. Does this matter?
Any help would be truly appreciated!
Kind regards
G. Volpin

Welcome to this forum!
I haven't done researches in that area.
As already told, you should contact Diocesan Archive and ask them to do research on your behalf.
It would be useful to know the exact parish or place of his birth.
Volpin surname, in Rovigo Province, is currently widespread in Rovigo and Fratta Polesine:
http://www.cognomix.it/mappe-dei-cognom ... ETO/ROVIGO
I've tried to look for his arrival in Brasil...
In the database of "Registros de matrícula da Hospedaria de Imigrantes" there are 6 people called Volpin, but anyone named Giovanni or Paolo

In the Archive there are duplicate copies of Austrian Civil Registers (births, marriages and deaths) for period 1820-1866, but there are some gaps. The region of Veneto became part of Italy either in 1861 (unification) or 1866 (third) Italian war of independence, meanig Rovigo was not Italy when my GGF was born. Hi,
You quote only his great-grandfather - Giovanni Volpin and the name of his parents, Paolo and Teresa Capato.
It would be required to report the names of grandparents. They were born in Brazil? Perhaps with this information facilitates the identification of immigrant and when he arrived in Brazil.
Você informou apenas seu bisavô João Volpin e o nome dos pais dele.
Talvez fosse importante informar os nomes dos avós. Eles nasceram no Brasil?

Thank you for all the replies!
In my great-grandfather (GGF)'s Brazilian death certificate from 1932 he is called João but we do not know his original Italian first name. Translated it should Giovanni, but perhaps he was called something else and he decided he wanted to be called João in Brazil.
Volpin is a surname with members from the province of Rovigo but there are a lot more Volpin's in the province just north, called Padova (also in Veneto)
It seems the surname Capato is quite typical from Rovigo.
GGGF - Paulo Volpin (Paolo in Italy)
GGGM - Theresa Capato (Teresa in Italy)
GGF - João Volpin (Giovanni/Giacomo? in Italy) from Rovigo, Italy / died in Pedreira SP 1932 @ 77
GGM - Pascoa Saturato (mother of Eugenio in his death certificate) OR Paschôa Santolato (wife of João in his death certificate).
GF - Eugenio Volpin from Pedreira SP, Brazil / died in São Paulo SP 1973 @ 70
GM - Francesca Lattari
the surname of my GGM is either Saturato or Santolato (quite different and both are mentioned in a death certificate - husband and son)... so I need to find my GGF and GGM marriage certificate. The story goes they met on the boat from Italy to Brazil and got married in Brazil (somewhere around Pedreira which is in the Campinas area).
Thanks / Grazie / Obrigada

Presumo que você fale português!
Se você verificar no óbito de Paschoa e os pais forem Antonio Sartorato e Anna Ferro, então ela veio com a família no vapor:
Vapor: CARLO R
LIVRO 014
pAG. 288
NR familia 02347
data chegada 11/11/1888
Destino: Fazenda Baronesa de Paranapanema, Jaguary (Jaguariuna, SP)
PASQUA 19 IRMÃ
Pai Antonio, 63
Mãe Anna 61
Irmão: Giacomo, 36 (nasc 22/07/1852 de Antonio e Anna Ferro, casou com Caterina Migliorin, 32, em Bovolenta, aos 29/06/1875. Ela é filha de Luigi Migliorin e Maria Peraro, de Bovolenta, Pd.
filho: Giovanni, 13 (nasc 27/07/1875) Bovolenta, PD

Hi Erica, Ola Cesar,
In the past few months quite a few things happened; we finally found João's = Giovanni's birth place and we have his Italian birth and baptism certificate ("Certificato di Nacscita e Battesmo") in our possession! very happy about this!
He was not born in 1854/1855 as I calculated (1932 death minus age of 77 at death) but in 1853.
Giovanni was from the small town of Ceregnano, Rovigo province, Veneto region.
We also found my grandmother's birth certificate (1901), and my grandparents' marriage certificate (1924 in my grandmothers hometown of Tambaú SP, Brazil).
Next on the list is my Italian born great-grand mother (Giovanni's wife) who has been mentioned in 3 documents with three different surnames. None of these surnames seem to be very common...
GGGF - Paolo Volpin
GGGM - Teresa Capatto (two t's and not one as on Brazilian documents)
GGF - Giovanni Volpin from Ceregnano (RO) Italy [BRAZILIAN MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE]
GGM - Saturato / Santolato / Satoratto / "Sartorato" from Italy
Paschôa Santolato -> wife of João/Giovanni on his death certificate
Paschoa Satoratto -> mother of Eugenio on his marriage certificate
Pascoa Saturato -> mother of Eugenio on his death certificate
"Sartorato" per Cesar's post
[NEED CORRECT SURNAME, ITALIAN BIRTH CERTIFICATE & BRAZILIAN MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE]
GF - Eugenio Volpin from Pedreira SP, Brazil [NEED BIRTH CERTIFICATE]
GM - Francesca Lattari / Latario [NEED DEATH CERTIFICATE]
Francisca Lattari -> on her marriage certificate of 1924 and husband's death certificate of 1973.
Francisca Latario -> on her birth certificate from Tambaú SP, Brazil in 1901
It is incredible that even my grandmother's surname has two different spellings... Lattari versus Latario. We always thought it was Lattari (sounds more Italian to me as well), but her birth certificate from 1901 states Latario (one "t" and an "o" at the end).
The search continues.
I will take a look into Pasqua Sartorato who arrived on 11/11/1888 in Brazil and who went to Jaguariuna, SP with her family.
Jaguariuna SP is very close to Pedreira SP where the Volpin family settled down.
Pasqua/Paschoa is likely to have been younger than her husband. Giovanni/João was 50 when my grandfather Eugenio was born in 1903. He was the 5th of 7 children (and Pasqua/Paschoa died giving labour to the last child Linda).
(João) Romano was an older brother who apparently was a famous orchestra leader in Pedreira and he was a witness on my grandfather's wedding.

Compliments for your discoveries and thank you for updating us on developments of your search.
Only the surname Sartorato and Lattari still exist in Italy, therefore you have to focus on those.
Here on Familysearch.org you can find civil acts for Bovolenta (period 1871-1929):
https://familysearch.org/search/image/i ... %3D1946877
And this is the marriage act of Sartorato Giacomo, Pasqua's brother:

Good luck!
